The World's Toughest Long Distance Tri

In the tradition of NORSEMAN and CELTMAN, Triathlon X tests the athletes to their limit. At over 5100m of ascent in 140 miles of grueling Lake District mountains, the X is the world's toughest extreme triathlon. From the shores of Ambleside on Lake Windermere in the Lake District, blueseventy set up camp for a weekend of adventure, and to cheer on each and every one of the competitors who made the journey to Triathlon X. Ambleside is a pure outdoor playground and is also home to Swimthelakes, our exclusive blueseventy retailer run by Pete and Andrea Kelly.

As competitors started to roll into camp on Friday, the daunting task ahead started to become clear: a 2.4 mile swim in England's longest lake, followed by a 112 mile epic ride around the famous Fred Whitton bike route and finishing with an unforgiving trail marathon up and down the iconic Scafell Pike mountain.  It was going to be survival of the fittest for sure. Thanks to everyone who came by to say hi and talk to us on Friday, we are in awe of what you achieved and we loved watching you race!

Race morning was memorable as the mist hovered over the Lake in the wee hours, making visibility and navigation an additional challenge for the athletes. Soon transition was deserted as the bikes disappeared up the mountain passes, the fog lifted and we couldn't resist: it was time for our team to head out for a pre-breakfast swim!

What an amazing day of racing, with a superb win by Andrew Drobeck, from Montana USA who finished the race in 12:38 - well within his sub-13hour target and with a comfortable 80mins lead. Gareth Huxley and Darren Jones came in only 4 minutes apart to complete the Ironman podium.

In the women's field, Daisy Baggs (Team Newcastle) looked strong all day and managed to hold off Christine Howard (Police) and Jan Rogers (Chester Tri) to take the victory in 16:50.

We can't wait to be back next year to Ambleside in 2017. Check out the official website for full results and race details, including the Half Triathlon X taking place on Sunday 25th September.
